Sandblows bury the forests in their path as they are blown across the island like a liquid wave of sand by the prevailing southeasterly winds. Only hundreds of years after being buried do the trees’ skeletons become exposed again. Although forests die under tonnes of sand, this process represents a great period of metamorphosis on the island. Every hill on Fraser Island is there through the action of a sandblow. If you were to return to this place in a thousand years it would probably be covered by plants again.
